BACK TO KHUTBAS

Summary of the Khutba of Friday 14th March 2003.
At the Great Mosque of Jumeira. Dubai.
Shaykh Fouad Ghazi al Imam.

Alhamdulillah, whomever surrenders himself to Allah, Allah is sufficient for him.

Ashhadu an la illaha illa Allah wa Ashhadu ana Muhammad Abduhu wa rasuluhu.

I give witness that there is no god but Allah and I give witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.

Muslims! The intelligent person in this life is the one who reflects not just about today but the one who reflects about the long term future and the consequences of his actions for this life and the next.

One of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bestow His blessing upon him and grant him peace, Uqba ibn Aamir, came to him (may Allah bestow blessings upon him and grant him peace) asking: " Ya Rasul Al-lah, oh Messenger of Allah, what is salvation?"

In other words: What will save man in this world from oppression, from trial, from others and from the suffering of the next life?

The Prophet (may Allah bestow blessings upon him and grant him peace) said : "Hold your tongue, keep company with your family and turn away from wrong actions".

The first objective of Islam since the Hijra, the Migration of the Prophet and his companions from Makkah to Madinah, was the building a society of safety, peace, tranquillity, mutual help, concern for the weak and the sufferings of others. We are one community.

There is a well known saying, attributed to the Messenger of Allah: " Whoever has no concern for the affairs of the Muslims is not one of us." This is not achieved except by constant righteous actions towards them and virtuous supplication for their needs and troubles.

1. The first advise from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bestow blessings upon him and grant him peace, to Uqba ibn Aamir was: restrain your tongue from backbiting, gossiping, insulting and offending. The tongue has to be held from speaking bad and also from talking about what does not concern one.

Allah, glory to Him, says: " Do not interfere in that of which you have no knowledge, certainly your sight and your hearing and your mind... about it all you will be asked". You will be held accountable for it.

The Muslim should be concerned with the unity of his Ummah, the strength of his community and the its harmony. One should not spread rumours and bad opinions or gossip about others. The tongue and other limbs of the body will be asked on the Day of Judgement what they were up to; and what the tongue utters is a grave responsibility.

"They do not utter a word but that they have a vigilant watcher" says Allah in His Majestic Book.

2. Secondly, one should keep one’s attention to that which does concerns him. And naturally the first area of responsibility is your near ones: your family. You should give your utmost to your work, excel in what you do and strive to do things well. After that, pay attention to your family, teach you children the deen, the Qur’an and the fiqh. Transmit to them and to your family members wisdom to be implemented in their lives from the life and noble example of the Messenger of Allah and from his excellent companions.

Allah has reminded us of this in the ayat: "You who believe!, guard yourselves and your family from a fire which will use as fuel people and stones."

Man will be asked about his obligations towards the ones closest to him.

3. Thirdly, the Prophet, may Allah bestow His blessing upon him and grant him peace, advised turning to Allah in repentance from error. That is tawbah. Whoever makes mistakes must return to Allah in tawbah. We all make mistakes and the best who errs is the one who repents. The Mercy of Allah is greater than our faults. Tawbah has rules and conditions: the first condition of Tawbah is feeling regret and weeping out of fear of Allah.

" Two eyes will be safe from the fire of hell: the eye that cried out of fear of Allah and the eye that cried in his utmost struggle for Allah."

On one occasion, the Prophet, asked his companion, Ibn Masoud to recite the Qur’an to him.

Ibn Masoud replied: "Shall I recite to you that which was revealed to you?" The Prophet said: "Yes, I like to hear it from others". Then Ibn Masoud recited until he reached the verse:

"How will you be if Allah brings a witness against every community and brings you as a witness against your community" And he, may Allah bestow His blessing upon him and grant him peace, could not contain his tears flowing from his eyes.

Remember, whom fears Allah will make everything afraid of him. If you want to be safe if you want safety al salvation for you and for your family: be with Allah, Allah will be with you and give you protection, in ease times and in difficulty, in sickness and in health. Be with Allah. Allah is greater than everything. He is the Greatest and everything else is small.

And remember: If all humanity was to gather to benefit you they will not do so except with that which Allah has already decreed, and if all humanity would gather to harm you they will not be able to harm you except in that which Allah has decreed for you. The pens have been lifted and the ink is dry.

The prophet (may Allah bestow His blessing upon him and grant him peace) said: Make your wealth good by giving zakat from it, heal your ill ones by giving sadaqah and keep away the huge waves of trouble by humility and supplication."
